CHAPTER I

Saint Ignatius School is fortunate to have the help of the Los Angeles Unified School District which provides computer-assisted instruction in literacy to students in our school who test below the 50% in these areas. At present these classes take place in a portable unit on our property. Instruction will emphasize literacy instruction and reading recovery for grades K-4.

If a parent chooses not to have their child participate in this "pull out" program, they may write a note to the school Principal at the beginning of the year.

COMPUTER

Students in grades K-3 are engaged in an exciting program, Writing to Read. Basic to the philosophy of this program is that whatever we can say we can write and if we can write it, we can read it. Children in this program go daily to the computer lab and work within five centers. We have noticed tremendous growth in our students since this program began at St. Ignatius over 8 years ago! The children can read and write very well!

Students in grades 4-8 go to the computer lab once or twice a week. The Computer Lab Director follows the Archdiocesan Computer Curriculum, whereby the children learn word processing, graphics, programming and keyboarding skills. Our program has been expanded with the addition of sixteen new CD-ROM IBM computers, networking of computers and wiring of school for internet

LIBRARY

Our well-equipped school library is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. Classes are scheduled to visit the library on one of these days each week. Classes also utilize the library for research work at other times on these days. If a child returns a book late, there is a fine of 10 cents per day. The late book(s) can be returned to the child's teacher or to the office if the library is closed. We will give it to the librarian when she arrives

TESTING PROGRAM

The students in grades 2- 8 are given the annual Stanford Achievement Tests in September (See the calendar for the exact dates). It is essential that your child(ren) be here for all these days. Please be sure to make any medical appointments at another time. At the November Parent/ Teacher Conferences you will receive these test results and will have an opportunity to discuss them with your child's teacher.

In addition to these standardized tests, the teachers will give tests periodically to the students to determine their comprehension of the subject matter being taught.
